We often encounter different types of people. When we look at their faces, we can instantly say whether they’re looking good or not. So, how can we say that? Of course, we can see his face, but what if I tell you it entirely depends on skin type?

There are 5 skin types in general.

Many people are unaware of skin types and struggle to choose the right products. As a result, they frequently do it wrong.

Knowing your skin type is of utmost importance. It’ll allow you to choose the right products and plan your grooming routine, with that in mind, let’s try to understand skin types and how to exfoliate based on them.

Let’s get started.

The sebaceous glands:

Before going any further let’s look at sebaceous glands, these glands play an integral role in determining your skin type. They present all over the body except palms and feet.

They also present at the end of hair follicles and produce sebum – a natural moisturizing substance(oily)secreted by these glands.

These glands were also responsible for protecting skin from dryness caused by the outside environment.

I’ve discussed sebaceous glands in detail here, I hope you got a basic idea about Sebaceous glands, so, let’s understand skin types.

The way of determining your skin is called skin type. Though it is purely based on genetics and DNA, other factors may influence them, such as climatic conditions etc,.

Anyway, coming to our topic of skin types, generally there are 5 skin types.

They are:

Normal skin type

Dry skin

Oily Skin

Combination Skin

Sensitive

Let’s look at these 5 skin types in detail.

Normal Skin Type:

Normal skin is a gifted skin type. Why? Because it is neither dry nor oily. Everything about this skin type is perfectly balanced. But it doesn’t mean that you don’t take care of it—of course, you have to.

It has a regular texture; the skin often looks clean, and soft that’s the reason it is a gifted skin type. People with this skin type need less care but do keep in mind to take care of it.

How to Determine Normal Skin Type:

How to find if you have a normal skin type – Simple your skin is neither too dry nor too oily. Generally, they have a smooth skin texture.

Next up we have a Dry skin.

Dry Skin Type:

The dry skin type, contrary to Normal skin looks more dry – you can observe this by gently scratching your skin with your fingernail. If the scratch appears white it is a sign of dry skin.

Many people say that dry skin is responsible for several other external factors, like extreme weather conditions like cold or sunlight. It is true to some extent but, not entirely on these factors. These play a vital role as well, along with genetics.

How to Determine Dry Skin Type:

So, you might ask, how to know if I have dry skin? Dry skin usually produces less oil as you can guess, and makes your skin lifeless, making it lose shine and leading to wrinkles.

Combination Skin Type:

The combination skin type is a mixture of dry skin and oily skin. In some areas it is dry and in some areas it is oily. This is due to the unequal distribution of sebaceous (produces sebum) and sweat glands.

We already know that sebaceous glands are responsible for the production of oil/sebum. To protect your skin from dryness, sweat glands produce sweat that eliminates waste from the body.

How to Determine Combination Skin Type:

The quick way to determine the combination skin type is to look for an area on the face called a T-Zone.

The forehead, nose, and down to the chin, if these areas are more oily then you have a combination skin type.

Oily Skin Type:

Oily skin type produces more oil/sebum which protects our skin from dryness.

As you might guess from the above skin type, why oily skin produces more oil? This is because more sebaceous glands present in the skin.

The best part is, it has a more humid and brighter appearance, and as a result, the skin looks healthy.

You can observe more acne in people with oily skin type. This is due to the production of more sebum that blocks the pores and erupts causing pimples/acne.

How to determine Oily Skin Type:

You can identify this skin type by the T-zone itself as in combination skin type, but with one extra feature.

That is, the cheeks are more oily. In combination skin type cheeks are drier than oily skin type.

Sensitive Skin Type:

As the name suggests, this skin type is more sensitive to any chemical usage like face washes or body washes etc. Another point to note is that its outermost layer is more sensitive.

The protective layer of this skin type is not as rigid as in other skin types. That’s the reason if the skin is exposed to moderate heat or cold it produces rashes or acne due to the sensitiveness of the outer layer.

How to Determine Normal Skin Type:

If you are constantly experiencing rashes or other types of skin allergies then your skin type is sensitive.

Till now we talked about skin types and how to identify which skin type you have. Now let’s look at how to exfoliate based on your skin type.

How to Exfoliate Based on Your Skin Type:

This may seem abrupt placement of the topic but, it makes sense once you know about it. This is the determining factor in developing a grooming routine.

You need to develop a grooming routine for exfoliating your skin. As there are different skin types, following the same exfoliation routine does not work for every skin type. The skintype-based exfoliation is of utmost importance.

A quick example of why we need to exfoliate based on skin type; Suppose you have a sensitive skin type, and using a body scrub that is harsh, this may damage your skin and make it prone to rashes even more.

That’s the reason exfoliation based on skin type is worth knowing. So, let’s start with oily skin then.

Exfoliation For Oily Skin Type:

Exfoliation is of two types – physical/mechanical and chemical let’s look at it for different types.

Physical – Generally this skin type has more deeper pores. So, you can exfoliate with more pressure while using a brush or a pumice stone. Follow the exact steps that I mentioned in the earlier blog post on the exfoliation complete guide.

Chemical – The oily skin people have the liberty to go with a stronger chemical exfoliator like body scrubs that are acidic, for example, opt for a face/body scrub containing salicylic acid or glycolic acid.

Exfoliation For Dry Skin Type:

It is advisable not to exfoliate dry skin with mechanical means, but with one exception that is, you can use a wet washcloth and rinse off the top layer of your skin for physical exfoliation.

And a mild chemical exfoliator with moisturizing properties just to balance out things.

Exfoliation For Sensitive Skin Type:

You need to be very careful while exfoliating this skin type as it is prone to more irritation in this case a very gentle exfoliation is helpful to safely exfoliate without any blemishes – some sort of cut or a rash.

Many skin experts suggest skipping physical exfoliation for this skin type, so, stick to chemical exfoliators with gentle products. Generally, choosing AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid)and BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid)based chemical exfoliators helps in a smoother exfoliation experience for sensitive skin.

Exfoliation For Combination Skin Type:

As you know combination skin type is a mixture of dry and oily skin types, so you need to exfoliate accordingly with both physical and chemical means.

But how to do that? Simple carry out the physical exfoliation on one day of the week and chemical exfoliation on the other day of the week.

In other words, we often exfoliate 2 times a week right? So, for the first time use physical exfoliation and for the second time use chemical exfoliation.

Exfoliation For Normal Skin Type:

As I said earlier this skin type is gifted, you can use any of the two exfoliation methods both physical and chemical.

This is due to the pores are small, the skin texture is smooth, and the skin is less sensitive to blemishes too.

Conclusion:

With that we came to the end of the blog post, in this, we talked about skin types, what are 5 skin types, and how to determine your skin type.

And finally, we ended our blog post with how to exfoliate based on your skin type we even looked at how to exfoliate for each skin type.
